About

America’s deep traditions of giving, volunteering, and civic engagement go to the heart of our strength and identity as a nation – yet their future is uncertain, and key indicators show them in decline.

The Generosity Commission is being launched to address the critical need to better understand generosity in America now and how it can be strengthened. The Generosity Commission is a nonpartisan, cross-sector, broadly diverse group exploring profound questions that will shape the future of giving, volunteering, and other forms of civic engagement in America.

Our Work

From the first charitable drive in the Massachusetts Bay Colony to the latest crowdfunding campaign, pandemic response fund, or local organizing effort, giving, volunteering and civic engagement are ever-present throughout the American story.

American traditions of generosity and the non-profit sector they support shape the quality of life in every community, act as a social safety net, and weave together a strong civic and cultural fabric from a shared sense of meaning.

Today, we are facing new questions about the nature of our democracy, the roles that the government, private, and nonprofit sectors play in our society, and who is included in the dialogues and decisions that shape all of our lives.

How we navigate these conversations in the years ahead will set the course for generations to come. Each of these conversations are deeply intertwined with our practices of giving, volunteering, and civic engagement. To rebuild for our best future together, we must reimagine and reignite generosity—and engage every person in America in the process.
